We collected data with the audio computer-assisted self-interviewing method, chosen to enhance confidentiality and participants’ comfort levels and to increase comprehension among women with low literacy. The heterogeneity of people who are Hispanic and Latinos, who are comprised of a variety of ethnic backgrounds such as Native American, African and Spanish, makes identifying mental health needs a challenging but rewarding ordeal. The National Alliance on Mental Health reported that one in five Latinx people suffer from mental illness, making culturally competent outreach and treatment an urgent issue2. Delays in treatment or inadequate treatment could be due to language barriers, healthcare access, and cost, or to a bias on the part of the healthcare team. It is also possible that some Hispanic/Latina women might not seek care after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Another theory is that women are choosing to forgo careers in STEM to attain better work-family balance—rather than being pushed out by bias. Several new studies add to the growing body of evidence that documents the role of gender bias in driving women out of science careers. A 2014 study found that both men and women were twice as likely to hire a man for a job that required math. In our analysis of all US births from 2009 to 2017, we found a significant upward level shift in the number of preterm births among US Latina women that coincided with the 2016 US presidential election. This result appeared most pronounced for infants conceived or in their second trimester of gestation near the time of the election.

Foreign-born Latina women have a lower risk for preterm birth than their US-born counterparts.39 A decrease in the number of foreign-born women among Latina women giving birth immediately after the election could, therefore, have contributed to observed increases in preterm birth. If, however, compositional changes drove our results, we would expect a similar association between the election and male and female preterm births. Consistent with the literature reporting fetal sex differences in vulnerability to the maternal stress response,40 we found a greater response among male births.

The participants also engaged in role-playing activities that integrated these culturally appropriate themes and were designed to enhance women’s confidence in initiating safer sex conversations, negotiating safer sex, and refusing unsafe sexual encounters. We used community-based participatory research approaches to engage members of the ethnically diverse Latina community at all stages of the research. They participated in conceptualizing the study aims, adapting the HIV intervention materials, and developing assessment measures and recruitment strategies. The outreach workers were involved in identifying and selecting recruitment sites, conceptualizing recruitment strategies, developing culturally appropriate and appealing recruitment materials , and disseminating recruitment materials.
